INTRODUCTION Salmonella enterica serotypes are an important enteric pathogen throughout the world, and the infection caused by this organism is endemic in India (1,2). Of 130 reported S. enterica serotypes, Salmonella Typhimurium is the most common one (3). This serotype not only causes sporadic diarrhoea in the community but is also responsible for outbreaks in many paediatric hospitals in India (4).
